Calibrate is a new telemedicine weight-loss program that was launched on Wednesday on the back of $5.1 million in seed funding provided by Forerunner Ventures and Redesign Health.

Calibrate aims to provide its customers with a “metabolic reset” that will enable them to lose weight and keep it off. One of the core features of the program is a telephone app.

Providing an insight into how Calibrate works, Kira Wampler, venture chair, Redesign Health, said via a written statement. “Historically, we’ve focused on the wrong problem. We keep telling people to fight weight with willpower, and it’s not working. Calibrate will reset the paradigm to focus on success beyond the scale.”

People who wish to enroll in the Calibrate weight-loss program have to go through a comprehensive assessment with one of the company’s doctors.

The assessment also includes screenings of blood glucose, insulin, and cholesterol. The Calibrate assessment checks baseline kidney and liver function and thyroid health as well.

There’s a one-time charge of $100 to cover the cost of the assessment but customers can deduct this from the cost of the one-year program ($1,550) if they decide to go ahead.

People who join the weight-loss program are provided with a tailor-made weight-loss plan by their Calibrate doctor. They get further help via virtual meetings with a personal coach who sets weekly goals for exercise and sleep. The goals are trackable on the Calibrate app.

Program participants only focus on one thing per week, but Wampler points all the tweaks add up over the year.

At the moment, Calibrate is only available in four US States—California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. However, the company plans to expand its activity into further states over the next six to 12 months.
